Night City never ceases to surprise me. One moment I’m dodging bullets in a back alley shootout, the next I’m tracking a piece of art that falls from the sky. That’s the beauty of Cyberpunk 2077 — even in 2026, with all the updates and Phantom Liberty content behind us, the base game still hides these perfectly crafted little stories. The Space Oddity side quest is one of those delightful detours that starts with a mundane street encounter and spirals into something genuinely awe-inspiring.

I still remember stumbling upon it during my third playthrough. I had just wrapped up the main job “Playing For Time” and was cruising through Santo Domingo’s Rancho Coronado district, trying to clear out some NCPD scanner hustles. That’s when I spotted three homeless men huddled around a battered laptop, arguing about how to power it on. That laptop would become the key to a mystery — and to a painting that would look damn good on my apartment wall.

How to Trigger the Quest

Space Oddity only becomes available after you finish the main quest Playing For Time. Before that, the homeless crew won’t even spawn. I learned this the hard way on my first run, wandering Rancho Coronado for ages without any luck. Once the prerequisite is met, simply head to the marked location in Santo Domingo, just northwest of the Rancho Coronado fast travel point. You’ll find the three men struggling with a laptop that refuses to boot.

Interacting with them triggers a conversation. Now, you have multiple ways to get that laptop:

  • Buy it outright. The easiest path — hand over some eddies and the device is yours. No fuss, no drawn weapons.

  • Intimidate them if your Body stat is high enough. A few well-placed threats, and they’ll hand it over without a fight.

  • Use your Streetkid Lifepath dialogue option. Being a native of these streets gives you the right words to convince them to cooperate. I love how the lifepath system gives those small moments an extra layer of role-playing.

Once the laptop is in your possession, the next hurdle is unlocking it. If you’ve invested in Intelligence, you can crack it open right there with a quick hack. Otherwise, you’ll need to track down the original owner. The homeless guys mention where they found it, so head to a nearby alley and look for a corpse. Loot the body, grab the access shard, and the laptop is yours to explore.

What’s Inside the Laptop

Digging through the files, I uncovered something incredible. The laptop belonged to a high-end art collector — one with eccentric tastes and apparently connections off-world. There’s a series of encrypted communications, a manifest for a shipment, and a delivery point out in the Badlands. Reading those documents sent a chill down my spine; it felt like stumbling into a conspiracy. The mission updates, and a new objective appears: head to the rendezvous coordinates near the Protein Farm.

The drive into the Badlands is almost meditative. Red dust, twisted metal scrap, and the distant hum of wind turbines. I reached the designated spot at dusk, the sky a bruised purple. Before I could even park my Arch motorcycle, I saw a streak of light, then a package plummeting from orbit, slamming into the dirt like a meteor. Johnny Silverhand materialized beside me, sardonic as ever, muttering something about art and absurdity. The man has a point.

Securing the Prize

The landing site isn’t peaceful. Two Militech vans and seven heavily-armed soldiers have beaten me to it. They’re patrolling the area like they own the damn desert. A firefight was inevitable. I used my Netrunner build to take control of a turret, then let Contagion spread through the ranks before finishing the rest with a trusty Malorian Arms pistol. If you’re more of a guns-blazing Solo, pick your cover — the vans offer decent protection — and keep an eye on grenades.

Once every soldier is down, approach the cargo container. Inside, you’ll find the legendary painting Untitled 18 – Brancesi, 2021. Johnny offers a brief commentary on the artist, Brancesi, a name that resonates with anyone who cares about high culture in the Cyberpunk universe. The quest concludes, and the painting is automatically added to your apartment decor. You can visit your V’s place and admire it on the wall, a tangible trophy of a most curious adventure.

Why This Quest Sticks With Me

Space Oddity is quintessential Cyberpunk 2077. It blends the mundane (some guys with a broken laptop), the futuristic (an orbital art drop), and the personal (a little decoration for your home). The David Bowie reference in the quest name isn’t lost on me either — it’s a subtle nod to isolation, marvel, and floating in a tin can far above the world. I appreciate quests that don’t rely on combat entirely; this one lets you use social skills, technical prowess, and exploration to piece together its narrative.

After three years since the game’s relaunch with the 2.0 update and Phantom Liberty, I’m still uncovering these gems. Space Oddity might be a simple side job, but it encapsulates what makes Night City feel alive: every street corner might hold a homeless man with a laptop that leads to art falling from the heavens.

Tips for a Smooth Run

  • Save before approaching the Badlands. That Militech squad can be tougher than expected if you’re underleveled. A quick save lets you try different combat approaches.

  • Craft ammo and upload your best quickhacks before heading in. The environment offers few hacking targets beyond the turret, so prep matters.

  • If you want to avoid the fight entirely, well, you can’t — but you can kite the soldiers into a nearby group of Wraiths or use the explosive barrels around the site.

  • Check your apartment afterward. The painting appears in the living area. It’s not worth a ton of eddies but it’s a conversation piece and a reminder of a stellar side quest.

I’ve done Space Oddity three times now, and each run, I find a new reason to smile. The first time I stumbled upon it blind, the second I experimented with dialogue options, and the third I just wanted that painting back after a fresh save. Whether you’re a new merc just finishing the heist or a seasoned edgerunner clearing your map in 2026, this odd little mission deserves a place on your list.

Next time you’re in Rancho Coronado and see those three homeless men, don’t drive past. Stop. Chat. Buy that laptop. Who knows — maybe you’ll end up with a million-eddy masterpiece on your wall.
